Cadillac is poised to make its first entry into the luxury electric vehicle market later this year. Previews available on Cadillac’s website show a concept vehicle with sharp, angular styling, a fully-blocked front grille, and a modern interior cabin. Information is still scarce, but Cadillac has announced more information will be on the way on August 6, 2020. As mentioned, this is the first fully electric vehicle to enter Cadillac’s lineup. What we do know, is that the Lyriq nameplate will bring an entirely new crossover platform to Cadillac’s existing SUVs. It’s expected that the Lyriq will share a similar size with the preexisting XT5 and XT6 SUVs, making it a slight step up in size from the XT4. It’s yet to be seen whether the Lyriq will share a chassis with any of these vehicles, but it’s possible that the new exterior styling of the Lyriq could be passed on to future, more affordable Cadillac models if the Lyriq’s style proves to be a success. It’s been said that Cadillac’s parent company General Motors is using the Lyriq as a starting point for new, scalable battery technology that will allow the company to launch new EVs relatively quickly, with the goal of 20 electric vehicles entering the market by 2023, with big, exciting names like Hummer being a part of that new generation.
Initial estimates from Cadillac indicate that the Lyriq is estimated to start at $75,000, with the Luxury trim. The Premium luxury is estimated to cost an additional $5,000, as are the Sport and Platinum models, which is the most expensive trim level at $85,000. These numbers are on-point with pricing from competitors like Jaguar and Porsche, which have electric vehicles that start between 70 and 80 thousand dollars. Luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz are split in terms of what you can find however, with the BMW I3 starting at $44,000, and Mercedes still yet to reveal its fully electric vehicle, the EQS, which is estimated to start at $96,000.
General Motors’ new line of EV technology is called Ultium, and it will allow the manufacturer to produce batteries in sizes that range from 50.0 kWh to 200 kWh, with those larger form factors being reserved for large EV trucks like the Hummer. It’s expected that the minimum range on the Lyriq will at least be able to compete with the Tesla Model X (another top electric crossover), and the Audi E-Tron, both of which are rated for 300 miles. The Lyriq concept vehicle shows a particularly spacious interior, thanks to the design decision to offer only four seats— two in the front, and two in the rear, both divided in the center. The back seat passengers have access to a read touch screen. It’s hard to say how likely it is how many of those features will persist through further development, however, and whether a 5-passenger version of the Lyriq will be available.
The Lyriq hasn’t been given to top safety authorities like the IIHS or NHTSA for crash testing, but it’s likely that the vehicle will roll off the line with much of the same top of the line tech you see on Cadillac’s newest vehicles like the 2021 Escalade— a car that the Lyriq shares it’s giant 33.0-inch OLED display with, that does double duty as an infotainment system and gauge cluster. Expect to see Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspots as standard features as well, alongside Standard automated emergency braking systems that feature pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and adaptable cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving mode. Part of those packages will likely include an exceptional powertrain warranty like the one offered on the XT5 and XT6. Cadillac always pays your way for your first dealer maintenance visit. It’s expected that the limited warranty will last 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, and the Powertrain warranty will cover 6 years or 70,000 miles, which is relatively good for a fully electric vehicle.
